DAGHESTAN RUNNER, Northeast Caucasian

Late 19th Century

Remarkably in heavy-pile condition at significantly over a century of age, this tribal runner emits an infectious joie de vivre through its wide spectrum of deeply saturated, naturally dyed colors. Here the weaver-artist filled the classic Daghestan latticework not with myriad ’Sprig and Flower’ designs, but with larger scale, symbolic, and ever-changing star-form motifs on a potent field of heirloom ruby red. They went on to spontaneously place deconstructed or partial versions at the edges of the field. Two accent borders hold chains of vibrant jewels, each inscribed with the most elemental symbol for the Celestial Dragon’s energy. You will likely notice at second glance that the pattern in the outer ivory bands shifts into playful polychrome cubist pinwheels. The rich, laboriously rendered deep jade green is used with enthusiasm in the cheerfully glowing rosette primary border.
