In another innovative variation from the famed weaving center of Tabriz, a highly unusual book-matched pattern presents eight-petalled starflowers in delft blue amidst a panoply of uniquely drawn botanical elements. The entire composition appears to be in motion due to design truncations at the bottom, with the "stretched" flower at the top appearing to be pulled off the frame by some unknown force. One of the great aesthetic principles understood by the master weavers of Persia was employing dramatic color contrasts to create a powerful artistic impact. Here, understated desert tones hold chromatic surprises as intrepid forays into the world of abrash color-shifting technique reveal additional hues of buttercup, cornsilk, coffee, and iridescent turquoise.
