MOHTASHAM KASHAN, Central Persian

135cm x 208cm
3rd Quarter, 19th Century
This painstakingly crafted treasure, created at the apex of Mohtasham production, is executed with extraordinary sensitivity and inspired artistic exploration of its renowned tradition, beginning with the use of luminous soft and rich terracottas that draw us into its sublime display. Its masterfully template presents a cornsilk hued reserve (replacing the more common ivory base) that more softly yet dramatically sets off the use of midnight blue throughout. Instead of a typically lobed, rounder shape, the central medallion has a slender presence, sharing rather than dominating the field. Supple, relaxed vinery weaves through teeming, crisply drawing flowerheads, thereby providing an intriguging contrast. Effortlessly juxtaposing, rare evocative tones of cerulean and spectacular soft celadons complete this exquisite oeuvre.
