This finely woven art-level tribal artifact presents the highly iconic Gubpa pattern, a well sought-after visual paradigm within the Shirvan universe. The quartet of serrated palmettes aligned on a sublimely proportioned spacious field is believed to have evolved from Persian or Egyptian courtly standards. Each is atypically overscale, offering superb clarity of design with striking contrasts of ivory against firebrick red, adding a tremendously dramatic effect to this beloved traditional design motif. The vivid saffron hues of the beautifully woven “dragon” main border with purposeful, playful imperfections enhance the rug’s individuality. Along with minor bands of glittering daisies, the frame of this brilliantly integrated, elemental composition is complete. Good pile of incredibly silky wool illuminated by a mature patina adds continual visual interest and immense value sure to attract an astute connoisseur.
