This iconic Caucasian Karabagh medallion rug is related to Sewan Kazak and Lenkoran visual paradigms and provides a visceral, affective impact undiminished by the passage of time. The rich, madder red field is dominated by elemental shield medallions in which two enigmatic shapes representing angular cloudbands inhabit the ivory portions of each escutcheon. The surround is enhanced by ancillary symbolic devices such as fertile ram's horns, golden emblems, and Diamonds of Strength. Prized accents of luminous cornflower blue and jade green are positioned in ways that add tremendous visual interest almost instinctually. An intrepid suite of borders features dramatic shifts in design, color, and scale that reveal the spontaneous hand of a bold improviser. The condition of this expressive folk art piece happily remains superb.
