("New Arrivals Gallery") Very seldom found, early weavings from Serab in Northwest Persia are known for their innovative, folkloric patterning within a traditionally recognizable aesthetic framework. The rich, golden brown undyed camelhair ground of this 170-year-old short corridor rug displays subtle abrash, visually rippling the surface like soft sand dunes. Its two jewel-shaped medallions, one a sandstone hue, the other based in ivory, both feature esoterically stylized blossoms and leaves. An inverse triangle at the top of the field is an echo of the lower medallion and conveys the idea that the central chain continues beyond the frame. Nearby the four geometricized flowerheads nestled in pairs of leaves, flashy trapezoids flank the edges of the field. The ivory-based border displays a luminous chain of abstracted flowers stacked like ancient Tetris blocks. Beyond this, a color-shifted crenelated edge surrounds squared blossoms in the main border.
