("One of “60 Best-of-Their-Type Rugs Sold in 2022") During a carpet-making resurgence in the last quarter of the nineteenth century, famous carpet makers such as Hadji Jallili and Hadji Baba Ganjeh, among many others, were actively weaving rugs and carpets for European, American, and domestic markets. This finely woven and beautifully drawn carpet is one of a small group associated with the weaver Hadji Baba Ganjeh. He tended to use colors, particularly mulberry red, associated more with Kirman than Tabriz. Scholars have suggested he began his career in Kirman and then moved to Tabriz. Here, an incomparable floral extravaganza is rendered in luminous mulberry red, golden farro, and dusty periwinkle blue. Before the weaving started, the initial conception of the intricate design could not be overstated. The classic overscale centerpiece and four-corner spandrel arrangement give way to virtuoso splashes of lush vinery, majestic motifs, and etched tree designs. With its lobed center and flowerhead, the medallion is surrounded by, first, golden farro and, second, a mulberry red layer. Beyond these concentric rings is another zone of golden farro, while the distinctive cornerpieces each reveal a unique floral shield with a somewhat European pedigree. This exquisite, supernal carpet is undoubtedly the most accomplished example of the "Concentric Medallions" design we have ever offered.
