(Connoisseur-Caliber) High-level 19th-century Turkoman carpets in the superb condition found in this piece have become very scarce on the market, and those of the Chodor sub-type is even more seldom seen. Once under the aegis of the Yomut Turkomen, the Chodor nomads gained some autonomy in the 18th century and perpetuated their spin on the pattern languages from Central Asia. Invested with expansive movement, individualistically depicted stepped "diamond" guls in peacock blue, vermilion, ivory, and ocean green depict specifical Chodor motifs, many with additional improvised ornamentation. Zig-zag vines of cubist daisies surround each column. Each lozenge in the vertical bands of the main border is noticeably varied in shape, size, and central motif. The minor bands continually morph as they wind around the center. Note the checkered selvages and flat-woven ends that rarely survive. The lower kilim contains a copious amount of the rare Tyrian purple.
