CLOUDBAND KAZAK, Southern Central Caucasian
4' 3" x 7' 1"
130cm x 216cm
3rd Quarter, 19th Century
("New Arrivals Gallery") Woven on the slopes of the Caucasus Mountains in the tribal village of Chondzoresk in Armenia, this striking Cloudband Kazak presents a spectacular level of character, spontaneity, freeform artistry, and color mastery. The recognizable and inscrutable motifs within the composition combine to create a window into the vital tribal mind of that time. Two overscale medallions contain the dynamic scrolling cloudbands associated with celestial forces and are the ancient namesake of this iconic style. In the abrash-striated field, symbolic "Wheels of Life" representing the cyclical fortune of humanity commune with a profusion of hieroglyphic birds, fantastical horses, and weaver's combs that skillfully soften the monumental impact of the medallions. A lyrically drawn chalice and oak leaf border float free from the edges. Not only did this collector's gem defy the odds of survival after 150 years, it still possesses luxuriant heavier pile.
