("One of “60 Best-of-Their-Type Rugs Sold in 2022") The "handle" of this antique Ferahn (i.e., the pliability of the textile when squeezed in the palm of the hand) is referred to as "like a handkerchief." This suppleness, along with its exceptionally dense weave, is characteristic of early 19th century work from this region, as we conjecture the descendants of the Safavid workshops populated this area after the dynasty collapsed. Beyond its riveting color zones and numerous artistic nuances harkening from an earlier age, this carpet is significant in the continuing story of antique Oriental rugs. During this period, floral area rugs were always the work of one weaver who designed and wove them, and because of this, one finds more invention and uniqueness. Looking at this piece, one sees rug artistry from the second half of the 1700s that was still influencing weavers into the next century. Then, floral rugs were much more angular, simply faceted, and generally more imagistic instead of realistic. Note the suggestion of spandrels in the field. It is hard to say which part of this rug is more fascinating, the center of the borders! A virtuoso, freehand approach to pattern is revealed, capturing a timeless rhythm. The art of dyeing of this time could create such a fathomage that the colors continue to deepen into the wool yarn, thus assuring a luminescence only great age can produce. This artistic virtuosity and heightened fluidity evoke the Sufic insight that everything in the universe is at once individual yet part of a larger whole.
