("Great Lakes Collection") This dynamic representative of the “Cloudband” Kazak sub-style offers vibrant natural colors and intensely totemic folk artistry. Two striking medallions present this style’s fabled namesake devices manifesting from central squared rosettes. These enigmatic forms in the mythology of the Far East represent the “bands of clouds” created by the vapors that enclose the celestial dragon as it flies overhead, emanating an age-old, deeply symbolic ambiance of benevolence and good fortune. Enjoined pairs of cuneiform stars and polychrome checkered rectangles fill the remaining stepped expanse. The human figures represented are astonishing in their ingenuity and humor. Two skirted people on the left side of the scarlet field seem to have grinning expressions while holding hands and birds aloft over their heads. Another mysterious individual on the right holds on to their hat while an extended arm bears another bird, reflecting the art of falconry that was practiced by this weaving group. A wide array of seemingly sporadic secondary motifs greets the eye, including bold “Stars of Wisdom,” sun disks, striped fantasy animals, bottle-shaped polygons, and other fabulously stylized birds. As well as having tremendous graphic power and phenomenal symbolic import, this rare treasure remains in spectacular heavy-pile condition. GLC rugs cannot be purchased using exchange credit.
