("One of “60 Best-of-Their-Type Rugs Sold in 2022") The Caucasus lies at the very heart of the rug-weaving world through its proximity to the silk route, which brought the influence of many eastern rug-making, and other cultural traditions. Caucasian tribespeople have transformed these influences into simple geometric yet dynamic designs, making them their own with artistic freshness and tribal spontaneity. Perpedil weavings are renowned for their use of the “Ram’s Horn” with its curling arms and an ancient rendition of the venerable dragon motif, both very powerful symbols in the tribal lexicon. Here, the field pattern consists of an ascending series of ram’s horns, primitive dragons, broad geometric flowerheads, and a pair of octagonal medallions on a deep indigo ground. Numerous smaller totemic motifs dwell amidst the larger designs, all resting beneath an upper prayer niche with a triangular cartouche enclosing the date 1263 AH or 1845. The border suite utilizes many classic Northeast Caucasian designs rendered here with assured dexterity. A Kufic main border touts an exceptionally rarely-seen leaf green ground.
