("One of “60 Best-of-Their-Type Rugs Sold in 2023") The legendary dragon and phoenix concept maintained a strong fascination with Bakshaish weavers who apparently embraced the ancient symbolism of the Far East through Silk Road connections. Here, the “Dragon and Phoenix” is depicted in a very amorphous way, found within the stepped centerpiece and corner spandrels. The dragon and phoenix symbols are locked in an eternal dance of life and rebirth. The central hexagon is based on a superbly abrashed charcoal base with four flowerheads seemingly separating a pair of dragons and a pair of smaller phoenixes. The centerpiece rests amidst an array of ascending floral sprays and small trees reminiscent of Joshegan patterning, on a soft brick-red ground. Immediately above the stepped hexagon resides a vase-like vessel filled with calligraphy, perhaps commemorating an important event. The lower corners based in sapphire blue and the upper corners in cornflower blue, are replete with spontaneously drawn blossoms, animals, and birds.
