High-level 19th-century Qashqai rugs are well-loved for their abundance of individually drawn motifs and engaging, saturated colors, making them the most popular of the nomadic South Persian tribes. A casually drawn pair of linked medallions house organically abstract roses and poppies connected by a network of tendrils. In the field, the motifs take on a more geometric note with polygon blossoms "rolling" around elemental animals and weavers' combs as though in an ancient pinball machine. Jack-like quatrefoils are stamped on a reticulated ivory grid in the spandrels and vertical perimeters. Flashbulb boteh seeds in the border create a unique and charming frame. This piece's intriguing designs are coupled with the tremendous depth of the mellow 19th-century Qashqai color palette, including a signature strawberry red. This wonderfully preserved gem proudly exhibits visual innovations, made more striking with a gentle patina.
