The evocative graphics from the Bidjov design tradition providing haunting anthropologic images and symbols are deeply admired by collectors. The grouping of motifs in this piece upholds the Bidjov aesthetic, amplified by a captivating palette of tonalities not seen in other of these pieces. Sable brown as the field color, for example, breaks the mold as does the touches of Tyrian purple, terracotta, and the xanthous tan at the center. The Bidjov sub-style reimagines dragon and sunburst motifs in other of its iterations, while here soaring deconstructed winged creatures rivet our attention, brilliantly expressed by a highly dexterous weaver at the height of her craft. The rug’s chromatic spectrum is wide also offering rosy sandstone, buoyant azure, dark teal, crimson, and copper, displayed throughout the field and border. Close inspection shows the continual nuance in the hues, which lends great visual depth to this painterly composition. This piece is a woven reflection that distills the inspiration and mystery of life in this high Caucasian mountain region into a work of art. Two elemental borders of equal width frame this natural portrait. The outer band is often seen in rugs from the Kuba region. This gorgeous tribal weaving happily shows that its previous owners considered it precious, as it is still in fantastic higher-pile condition.
