("One of “60 Best-of-Their-Type Rugs Sold in 2023") As a profoundly compelling artwork destined to continue to increase in rarity over time, this carpet excels with its grandeur and organic movement. An eloquently sculpted medallion of colossal proportions nearly fills the field, representative of an enormous flower decorated with meandering vinery in bloom. Its exquisite cruciform centerpiece is like a portal with a view of sea and sky through a fascinating color shift from sea foam green at the bottom to sky blue a quarter of the way up. Serapi artistry is exemplified by this piece’s panoply of brilliantly drawn, unabashedly spontaneous elemental leaves, fronds, and flower heads connected by ingenious pathways, evoking tendrils coursing through a garden. Three-pronged “pendants” are placed in the four corners as stand-ins for spandrels. An exquisitely folkloric rosette and jagged oak leaf pattern is purposely more loosely drawn than elements in the field to create a harmonious tension.
