(High-Collectible +) ("One of “65 Best-of-Their-Type Rugs Sold in 2024") Serapi carpets such as this masterpiece speak to the centuries and tell a tale of a time now lost when spacious designs filled with spontaneity and a buoyant mellow colorway were the order of the day for pieces created before the 1850s. Artful proportional shifts in the magnification of motifs and a sense of expansion are evident in the proud overscale medallion and surrounding field as the weavers worked their way upward. Not only does the design morph and mature — take a moment to look at the variation between pendants and corner spandrels — but the colors also shift into reimagined tonalities. In actuality, these abrash textures add tremendous depth and dimensionality across this carpet's entire room-size expanse. It is evident that the weavers were using this millennia-deep tradition not only with shades of a specific color but also by using two different tonalities to create entirely new hues. This Serapi's tribalistic border design is a geometric version of a centuries-old courtly motif drawn here with immense playfulness and beautiful inexactitude.
