("One of “60 Best-of-Their-Type Rugs Sold in 2022") The arising of the antique Ferahan rug style of the 19th century, geometricizing the purely curvilinear lines of the City carpets, seems to have been in the position to launch the Town rug tradition as a distinct floral type of Persian carpet. This striking piece is a beautiful example of this aesthetic expressed with mind-boggling fine knotting, which is the signature element of Ferahan weaving. Presenting a design template popular with Persian weavers for at least two hundred years, this early example is meant to convey the rising, noonday, and setting sun, complete with powerful woven rays that are filled with a patterning, almost inconceivably complex. (Click through to this rug's massive image to enjoy the level of dexterity achieved.) The powerful central medallion holds a finely etched floral arrangement and pair of endearing small birds. The rising and setting half-orbs, with their alternate-colored rays to the middle "sun," peak into the field from the edges. Four prominent daffodil plants and a collection of adorable flowers and stars constitute the field's decoration, along with the unconventional addition of two smiling characters with handlebar beards. The border design is often associated with these "sun" rugs and features facing planters interspersed with quadrifoil blossoms and "sunburst" symbols.
