This strikingly handsome, relatively early example of Bidjov weaving reveals an accomplished artistic maturity, expressed through beguiling constant subtle asymmetry and superb command of luminous 19th-century colors. Three pairs of crimson ram's horns harmoniously orchestrate the field surrounded by a motif-diverse visual landscape, treated with inspired use of scale that makes this pattern seem multi-dimensional. Archetypal split palmette and scrolling dragon motifs join innovative forms and a fascinating multiplicity of tiny ornaments, including knotwork rosettes and latch-hooked "Wheels of Life" representative of ever-changing fortune. Each motif floats on the spacious field, accentuating the enigmatic quality of this style's pattern language. The puzzle piece design of the interlocking "dragon" border has also been likened to perching birds that have transmogrified into polygons over time. Here the forms undergo gentle stretching and compression that levels up its visual interest. With heavier pile and intact original ends, this wonderfully esoteric tribal artwork is in unexpectedly good condition. as well
