(High-Collectible)
("One of “60 Best-of-Their-Type Rugs Sold in 2022") The antique Persian carpet style known as Mohtasham Kashan honors the memory of the 19th-century master weaver Hadji Mollah Mohammed Hassan Mohtasham who was, in turn, a descendant — and namesake — of a revered 16th-century Persian poet. Kashan refers to the Central Persian city where his workshop was located, historically a resort area frequented by the ultra-wealthy and royalty, whose support helped create a center of virtuoso craftsmanship. The highly detailed field design, a variation of the renowned “Garden of Paradise”, includes finely rendered trees, floral sprays, minuscule blossoms, and an array of enchanting birds, all resting upon an abrashed ruby red ground. Of particular note is the delicate drawing of the peacock’s tail feathers and the deep indigo tree branches emanating toward the center of the field. The masterful dye-work features exceptional secondary tones of sea foam green, numerous shades of indigo, as well as soft tones of farro and sandstone.
