Entrancing artistic maturity is apparent throughout this expressive Kuba, where a profound and sophisticated allover field design is the signature product of the tribal village of Konagkend in the Caucasus mountains. Like an ancient codex filled with now indecipherable writing, the patterning in the deep midnight field is a combination of rows of interlocking polygons, enigmatic dragon-like devices, hooked crosses, and stylized bird silhouettes. A glowing patina enhances its wide-ranging palette of superb time-mellowed colors. Borrowed accents, such as the "diagonal bar and rosette" border most often associated with Chi Chi weavings, create subtle links with the unique field composition uniting with effortless grace. Its mesmerizing accent borders glitter adding to the multiple layers of visual interest and energetic movement found in this piece. It is a superb example of a sophisticated geometric style that will sit comfortably on the floor amidst a refined setting or create an engaging interaction through placement on a prominent wall space.
