One of the great principles of beauty inherited and understood by the master weavers of Persia was the use of dramatic color contrasts to create a powerful artistic impact. That sense, inherited from a centuries-deep pedigree, is especially poignant in carpets with such a lush botanical pattern as elegantly portrayed as this over-century-old masterwork. From a scalloped and faceted midnight medallion encased in swirling vinery, a profusion of flowers and foliage proliferates along wire-thin branches. Rococo-like corner spandrels demonstrate an elaborate architectural decorative flair. Sophisticated hues range from strawberry vermilion, delicate pistachio, tangerine, ice blue, and seldom-seen spruce greens to create profound chromatic textures and dramatic contrasts. The wonderfully festive border is ultimately based on the classical Shah Abbas design, where globular palmettes gently rest on a bed of what appear to be evergreen boughs. Luminous wool quality and very good condition add to the appeal of this hand-crafted, highly refined court carpet.
