("Great Lakes Collection") Antique area-size Bakshaish rugs excite even the most seasoned of collectors and treasured because of their incredibly limited production and tremendous charm. A casually drawn serrated diamond medallion houses abstract flower heads like corona swaddled jewels among a vane like device. Its offshoot anchor pendants stir a glowing carnelian field of transmogrified blossoms made of both mountain sheep’s wool and camelhair knots. Those reduced to their most elemental are presented as floating polygons. Illumined azure corner spandrels hold almost figural forms behind their stepped boundaries. This superbly folkloric artwork is both symmetrically structured and intensely improvisational. It realizes a level of balance and harmony that is only accessible through an inspired combination of approaches. As a finishing touch, the weaver decided to use a band of undyed camelhair in the final margin, amplifying the overall chromatic harmony found in the composition. This rare gem would be equally exciting on the floor or wall as a fascinating reminder of semi-nomadic human innovation before the advent of electricity.
