("New Arrivals Gallery") This unusual find comes from one of five Khamseh tribes of Arabic origin that make up this prominent Southern Persian confederacy. Within interlocking stepped medallions, jewel-shaped pendants grow to the vertical corners of the diamond chain as though pushing them into shape. There, and in the lapis blue field, opposingly postured wild fowl (known as 'murghi' working tirelessly to feed their young) vie for precedence amidst a diverse landscape of apotropaic elements scattered across the field designed to bestow good fortune upon whoever possesses it. Whirling pinwheel florets, tiny S-shaped cloudbands, sprouting boteh (Seeds of Life), and other spontaneous ornaments make up the panoply of tertiary motifs that give this rug its power. The undulating “waves" that protrude from the perimeter are an unusual design element and a fascinating example of the juxtaposition of scale that makes this piece so intriguing. A dazzling assortment of borders frame this endearing long rug sparkling in radiant hues. Inconceivably, this 150-year-old tribal rug is in superb condition.
