("One of “60 Best-of-Their-Type Rugs Sold in 2023") Antique Serapi carpets have historically been the choice in early American state and federal buildings, including the White House. Many interior designers found the expanses of soft, patinaed color tones along with desirable uncluttered patterns to be the perfect match for numerous decors ranging from traditional to contemporary, Arts and Crafts, eclectic, and postmodern. This piece is a masterwork in simple yet effective geometric designs and rarefied use of natural dyes, especially the areas featuring abrash, or artistic color striation, which provide great visual depth and a subtle shimmering effect. The over-scale sandstone centerpiece consists of a middle rectangle emerging into two vertically aligned triangular pendants. This encloses an inner multifaceted star medallion surrounded by spacious angular vinery and flanked by a pair of striking broad palmettes based in coral. The centerpiece rests upon an unadorned madder red ground, enclosed by four corner spandrels based in a prodigious series of color striations from mint green in the lower field to the upper field in cornflower blue and pale azure.
