("One of “60 Best-of-Their-Type Rugs Sold in 2023") The usage and meaning of symbols found in antique Persian weavings are as fascinating as it is enigmatic. The “Tree of Life” design became the perfect metaphor in Eastern culture for heaven existing on earth and found its way into many distinctive carpets and other works of art. Here, this ancient design has been rendered in a very unique and geometric fashion. The main repeating series of “trees” could possibly be palm trees, or overscale sunflower plants; however, they also have a distinct visual connection to the scarab beetle which was considered a sacred entity dating back to ancient Egypt. Each tree medallion has been cordoned off inside a rectangle, along with a pair of smaller trees or plants, which is very reminiscent of the renowned “Garden Compartment” carpets. The three ascending rows are also edged by elongated tree trunks, yet without branches or leaves. The field’s base is a scintillating liquid aqua blue tone with masterfully rendered abrash or intentional color striations providing great visual depth and the perfect backdrop to the tree motifs.
