("New Arrivals Gallery") With a magnetic appeal, this Gubpa Shirvan rug vividly presents many prized qualities of this highly coveted Caucasian sub-style. The articulation of the almost prismatic diptych of diamond medallions with distinctively textured outlines is exquisite. Their complexity is accentuated by the powerful simplicity of the crimson Gupta serrated finials said by some rug scholars to be reminiscent of royal standards. This tribal piece is filled with apotropaic symbols designed to ensure good fortune and protect its owner from evil. "Wheels of Life," latch-hooked "lanterns," stars and triangular amulets known as 'tumar' are among the pantheon of semiotic devices passed down through oral tradition and woven into the fabric of this magical tribal rug. Vegetally dyed colors include masterfully wrought shades of pomegranate, emerald, goldenrod, copper, and cobalt. The even medium pile of this piece shimmers with a gentle patina. The exceptional clarity it lends to every motif creates a striking visage.
