Still in wonderful condition at over 150 years old, this mesmerizing area rug in the Kermanshah sub-style of Laver Kirman demonstrates the exceptional refinement and large-scale floral artistry that give these early examples their lofty position within the pantheon of classical Persian weaving. Two interlocking botanical arabesque structures create a riveting central medallion design and introduce the sense of fluid movement seen throughout this piece. The palmettes on the claret-toned reserve and luxuriant corner pieces continue this flourishing aesthetic, at once controlled and expressively organic. Its color palette includes an abundance of golden tan, earthy peach, and moss tertiary hues that, reminiscent of European Art Nouveau, support the exotic ambiance. Thankfully, this painterly rug still offers an even, medium pile that shines with a magical patina.
