This refreshingly original Bakshaish Camelhair rug demonstrates the harmonious color sense and casually balanced drawing for which the best antique pieces in this beloved style are well-known. No other Persian carpet tradition, floral or geometric, created as intelligently and consistently original folk art patterns as those woven by the inhabitants of the mountain valley village of Bakshaish. Fantasy botanical forms convey this tradition’s aesthetic through a pair of polychrome palmettes attached to pomegranate flowers and peony blossoms via serrated branches. The artist-weaver plays with symmetry. Tiny geometric inclusions and clever variations of line in every botanical form elicit a compelling visual language in subliminal ways the viewer may not be immediately aware of. To counter the organic contours found in the field, the whimsical geometry of the border pattern reads like a page from the cubist playbook, with slight variations in form and hue assuring endless fascinating nuances to be discovered. Its wonderfully versatile dimensions and superb condition greatly enhance its desirability.
