("The California Collection") In this exemplary envoy of the unmistakable Perpedil Caucasian substyle, an intricately woven menagerie of abstracted bird forms, sunburst blossoms, and ram's horn motifs are scattered in a chromatic chorus across an exceptionally rarely seen carnelian red ground. Impressive in its technical dexterity and reveling in crisp clarity, this imaginative 19th-century tribal weaving's strongest achievement is a masterfully expressed window into the rich, evocative relationship tribal artists experience with the pantheon of Caucasian symbolism. Other age-old designs seen here resemble spiky shrines, semaphore pennants, sunburst snowflakes, and pinwheels. Its unusual, nearly square dimensions are very seldom found in Caucasian pieces and are often sought after. Its luxuriant mountain wool quality is first-rate, and its heavier pile condition lends a shimmering, wonderfully tactile quality to the rug's surface. Astonishingly, its fringe ends are virtually complete.
