("One of “60 Best-of-Their-Type Rugs Sold in 2023") This virtually square Bakshaish is undoubtedly one of the most ancient and among the most successfully inventive and rarely seen rugs of this genre we have experienced. Its mesmerizing character results from a sparsely adorned, casually rendered diamond medallion that is spontaneously abrashed with daring denim-hued painterly streaks. The central blossom and surrounding lissom design overlay are open, allowing an unobstructed view of the aforementioned color striations. Its burnt copper, freeform field is visually breathtaking in its spaciousness and delicate striation textures. At the left edge, the striped band is abruptly stopped and then begins its path again. The top is embellished with a single diadem-shaped upper pendant. Four overscale spandrels containing abstracted blossoming wildflowers that are almost figural with welcoming “arms” outstretched. The borders are irregularly patterned, with the primary band, based in ivory, featuring the ancient ashik gul alternating with serrated diagonal forms that are geometricized vinery leaves. Sprinkled among the design are triangular talismans that jut from the edges or float between primary elements.
