A trio of soft vermilion cruciform medallions hovers over a reserve of deep Caspian blue in this totemic Akstafa Shirvan rug, a very seldom found Caucasian type. At their center, poignant "Wheel of Life" motifs represent the ever-changing fortunes of the people who lived in the mountainous enclave where this piece was woven. Its pattern language, including delicate crosses within small diamonds along the center axis, speaks to an Armenian origin. The orderliness of this striking rug's visual program is serene yet energized by the asymmetrical placement of carefully knotted enigmatic symbols - used in tribal rug making since time immemorial - and a menagerie of cosmic guardian creatures arranged with wise spontaneity by an experienced hand. One can become entranced by studying their individual personalities for untold hours. Among the kaleidoscopic animals are mythical peacocks with telescopic necks that don't mind providing shelter and transport for their more diminutive companions. The 8-pointed star and barber pole register bars in the ivory main border introduce buoyant color combinations that tremendously enhance this woven gem's magnetic presence. Equally distinguished on the floor or wall, this piece has retained good even pile at a venerable age.
