("One of “60 Best-of-Their-Type Rugs Sold in 2023") For over three thousand years the Persian lion symbol has represented kingship and divine power. During the 19th century, the lion also symbolized the heroes protecting the country against enemies. The allover, highly stylized floral pattern consists of rows of robust broad palmettes in lapis lazuli flanked by pairs of lions leaping toward each other. The weavers have subtly camouflaged the lions to appear as part of the floral design. Additional smaller floral motifs including broad flowerheads and trefoil floral sprays reside amidst the primary designs, all resting upon a spacious wheat-based ground. In the lower portion of the field can be seen a pair of diminutive human figures. Typically, the inclusion of human figures and the revered lion symbol would suggest this weaving was commemorating an important event.
