("New Arrivals Gallery") From the famed Bakshaish weaving tradition that always surprises through the variety of their inspired visual fantasias, this carpet is a showcase of deconstructed, elemental expression. The unique talent of weavers from a world that no longer exists is instantly apparent in this piece's incredible spaciousness, archetypal geometry, and harmonious naturally brewed colorway. Like a vast island materializing from a vermilion sea, the stepped medallion contains a pattern based on the traditional Herati design, given an improvised Bakshaish twist that is again reimagined in the soft Maya blue spandrels. Fanciful ultra-stylized botanical motifs pirouette across the reserve, each luminescent from expert dye recipes that have been lost to time. Unpretentious, relaxed symmetry and exhilarating spontaneity add to the mystery and movement of each floating form. No two shapes are drawn the same way in a rarely seen saffron golden border, further illustrating this vital Bakshaish sense that the symbolic ornaments presented are "hand-drawn." Long held in storage or on display in a lower-traffic place of privilege, this vivacious ancestor of modern art has retained a superb, even medium pile.
