It is hard to exaggerate how incredibly rare antique Bakshaish rugs in area-size, nearly square dimensions are and how exceedingly difficult they are to come by. The Michigan-based family collectors who acquired it knew this from experience, as do many of our long-term clients who are in the know. This piece showcases a finely detailed matrix of animated rosettes, curling leaves, and spiky flowerheads attached to implied vermilion latticework in an exuberant, age-old Herati pattern. Below, a sparkling “Bakshaish Blue” reserve is gently rippled with gentle color-shift striations that appear to reflect light like a radiant sun-dappled pool. The overall pattern is broken by a stair-step boundary to the luminous ivory spandrels, where the design suddenly rematerializes in a more spacious, relaxed configuration. A visually sympathetic series of borders leads to an outer margin of unadorned mocha-hued camelhair as an ingenious finishing touch. Luckily, its heavier pile condition implies that this treasured rug has been mostly sheltered from the ravages of time.
