("New Arrivals Gallery") With a narrative art aesthetic a master weaver's command of this regional style's motifs and penchant for pure saturated color is revealed in this highly engaging mid-19th-century Bidjov Shirvan. She brilliantly expresses herself through deeply personal, one-of-a-kind, deconstructed reinterpretations of Bidjov iconography while other features transform this piece into a visual record of an event in the lives of a rugged people. Elemental winged devices, masque-like flowerheads, and cubistic palmettes ascend the cobalt blue field. Amid the esoteric assemblage, four riders mounted on stallions, perhaps representative of actual people and animals known to the weaver, are prominently displayed in its center field. They are accompanied by canine companions used to assist with herding activities, or possibly represents a moment of danger in this tale. Aided by a mild patina, the drawing in this prize find is astoundingly clear, sharpening secondary motifs of birds, boteh seeds, and tiny cloudbands are scattered about. The rug's expertly dyed sonorous chorus of rich and paled tonalities emphasize the mysteries evoked by the age-old motifs. A zig-zag “Running Water” guard stripe is followed by crenelated “Mountain” stripes with an ultra stylized rosette and oak leaf band in between frames the field. This tribal treasure has been retained in superb condition with medium height pile.
