Many of the hallmarks of Hadji Jallili’s genius are abundantly seen in this shimmering, infinitely sophisticated Tabriz rug. Like an island drifting on a sandy sea, the exquisitely rendered medallion is bedecked with diminutive palmettes and elemental daisies. Ethereal anchor pendants drift in the reserve, pointing toward the polar directions. Ethereal budding vinery from the centerpiece re-emerges in the corner spandrels as if they were rhizomes having tunneled under the unadorned expanse. With exceptionally subtle skill, those in the lower pair are much more defined but not overly so. Textured desert earth colors are integral to achieving the sublime sophistication we have all come to expect from the renowned 19th-century Tabriz workshop of Hadji Jallili. Tonal gradations of burnt copper, blued steel, buff, sienna, Tuscan gold, electrum, and paled celadon are exquisite, enhanced by the time-softened patina of great age. Dark outlining in the upper border reveals the complexity of motifs that slowly fade away as your eye moves down this masterfully conceived, superb condition weaving in a sublime visual counterpoint.
