EAGLE KAZAK
4' 4" x 7' 3" (132 x 221cm) 3rd Qtr., 19th C.
(High-Collectible) ("New Arrivals Gallery") As every collector of 19th-century tribal rugs recognizes, the Eagle Kazak (Chelaberd Karabagh) is among the most acclaimed and challenging to find of 19th-century Caucasian rug styles. These rugs are often the crown jewel of any tribal collection and offer an unmatched experience of symbolic energy. This 140-year-old "Double Eagle" is a stunning example of this renowned subgroup. Its well-spaced, sparsely ornamented design gives it a sense of great visual expansiveness and depth. Each of its sunburst medallions is proudly drawn with exceptional sharpness with electrifying colors of rare bottle green, saffron gold, and scintillating royal blue. Take note of the weaver's whimsy at play in the secondary motifs. At first, their placement appears symmetrical, but in actuality, there is an artful spontaneity in the variety of their positions, leading to the sense that they were captured while in motion. Running parallel to the elemental ivory "crab" border, guard stripes featuring the "mountain" motif have wonderfully mischievous sections in red near the top to catch the eye and just because the weavers wanted to. Its superb condition, with even medium pile and no notable restoration, further contributes to the allure of these archetypal wonders from the upper reaches of the Caucasus Mountains.
