GENDJE RUNNER
3' 2" x 13' 2" (97 x 401cm) Circa 1900
(High-Decorative) ("New Arrivals Gallery") In this dazzling rug from the high-mountain village of Gendje, an adventurous, continually surprising diagonal stripe pattern, woven with lanolin-rich, shimmering wool, makes this joyful runner a remarkable find. Each bold stripe in the field contains esoteric, flourished rectangles with the occasional bird form making a spontaneous appearance. The ivory border is populated by motifs of double ram’s horns that spring from a central emblem, possibly derived from the Kufic design. Fabulously bold colors of ember red, emerald, deep royal blue, burnished gold, and bronze greatly enliven the entire composition. Boasting virtually full-pile condition, this superb Gendje runner will last for decades, bringing a sense of elation to those who tread its length.
