(Connoisseur-Caliber) This bold piece comes from the prolific northwest Persian Azerbaijan weaving region, a crucible of diverse customs and traditions. This unusual, high-quality example raises yet another voice from the chorus of the Bakshaish design vocabulary. Its symmetrically balanced, finely drawn array of architectural medallions and deeply saturated, naturally dyed palette are simply stunning. Here the pairs of cruciform and sunburst medallions, most often seen in works from nearby Karaja village, are clearly and aesthetically rendered. It is given a Bakshaish twist through the original forms and augmentations of the medallion sets. Half of the sunburst forms have morphed into angled bands with triangular ornaments, whereas the bright ivory cruciform pieces are embellished with highly original geometry. Bisecting the center is a signature Bakshaish convention of a flower-studded "staff." As a totemic suite, they are perfectly proportioned and spaced, investing a near-perfect harmony and balance in this surprisingly contemporary graphic creation. An unusually captivating presence and superb heavier pile condition combine in this fabulous woven trophy, sure to enhance the ambiance of any space, whether on the floor or wall.
