(Connoisseur-Caliber) Very rarely do antique Oriental rugs of such a folkloric nature appear in such grand dimensions. This highly singular, nearly 150-year-old Persian Malayer carpet is a masterwork likely created by a group of six weavers over a two-year period on an enormous canvas--a towering 20-foot high loom. It offers a virtuoso assemblage of balanced geometry and an entirely original pattern language. In an idiosyncratic expression virtually never seen in weavings other than small antique tribal rugs, each diverse element is united into a compelling whole. Luminous camelhair is the ideal base to ground and unify this panoply of motifs. It is also in wonderful condition for many decades of further use.
