Late 19th Century

Collected for their adventurous creativity and rarity, the best 19th-century samplers (known as Vagareh), woven as models to show the major elements of a large rug to be commissioned, are seldom-found specialty weavings that coveted by connoisseurs of rare antique rugs. This tour-de-force antique Persian Bijar (Bidjar) rug masterfully employs a range of asymmetrically oriented design elements to create an active, balanced composition. Note this 130-140-year-old Persian town rug's assortment of abstracted cypress and willow trees and its varying borders. Its unusually saturated palette of colors is masterfully dyed and sits wool is unusually silky and elastic. These attributes, combined with the rug's extraordinarily good condition with heavy pile and only small, localized spots of wear, will make this a strong addition to any antique rug collection.
