("One of “60 Best-of-Their-Type Rugs Sold in 2023") The area rugs and a very limited supply of antique runners woven in the Shirvan district are the most finely knotted and sophisticated antique carpets of the Caucasus region. Several villages within the Shirvan district wove unique designs that were exclusive to those weavers such as Akstafa, and, in this example, the village of Chajli. Although hard to find in today’s marketplace, Chajli weavings tend to be “long rugs” (not quite the standard length of a runner) and feature at least three overscale octagons. Here, an ivory octagon is vertically flanked by a pair based in cobalt blue, each filled with tribal totemic designs including the “Ram’s Horn”, rows of animal or bird heads, and geometricized trees. Striking colorful “latch hooks” in tones of gold, indigo, coral, and azure emanate onto the field from each octagon. Horizontal rows of hooked “Wheels of Life” are interspersed between the larger medallions, along with spontaneously drawn polychrome blossoms, all resting upon a robust madder red ground.
