("One of “60 Best-of-Their-Type Rugs Sold in 2023") Antique Mohtasham Kashan has become synonymous with the finest virtuoso Persian weavings, a style developed by master weaver Hadji Hassan Mohtasham and based in the historical city of Kashan. Although at first glance, this masterwork employs recognizable Persian carpet design elements, upon a closer look the field is a staggering artistic accomplishment. The field design operates on two levels, the lower-level a detailed latticework in tones of golden wheat, jade green, and ruby red, while the upper-level features flowing vinery in ivory and midnight indigo. This finely etched vinery beckons the eye to continually follow it throughout the field and discover a plethora of delightful shapes and color tones. The over-scale centerpiece with vertical pendants, enclosing curling vinery and detailed broad flowerheads, is based in midnight indigo and outlined by serrated vinery. The powerful simplicity of the central medallion is in perfect juxtaposition to the meticulous details of the field and stylistically alludes to the novel quatrefoil pattern in the main border.
