("One of “60 Best-of-Their-Type Rugs Sold in 2023") The renowned “Garden of Paradise,” the much-beloved design depicting ornate designs full of trees, birds, and fish, arose from the concept of heaven on earth in the form of gardens. Here, the primary focus is the superbly rendered “Tree of Life” beginning in the lower field and ascending upward. Its leaves, in various shades of indigo, are accompanied by four pairs of robust birds and numerous apples. A pair of finely drawn prancing rabbits and two regal lions rest at the base of the tree amongst tall grass. Since the 12th century, lion symbolism was adopted by the ruling emperors as their symbol of power, although rendered here in a more benign-looking fashion. Below the tree flows a waterway with two pairs of colorful ducks and single pair of fish with ruby red heads. The changing base color adds to the realism of the scene, with lighter tones used in the waterway, deeper browns representing earth at the base of the tree, and wonderfully striated ivory undyed sheep's wool as the sky.
