(High-Collectible)
("One of “60 Best-of-Their-Type Rugs Sold in 2023") This masterful example of 19th-century Persian city workshop weaving bears the trademark elements of the acclaimed carpet maker Hadji Baba Ganjeh. This noteworthy rug designer, who first started in the city of Kirman and eventually settled in Tabriz, is renowned for his fine artistic rendering and skilled use of only a handful of unique chromatic tonalities. This outstanding example of this rare style combines elements of the classic central medallion layout as well as incorporating a subtle allover pattern. The diminutive crimson centerpiece, which again appears in six partial forms along the edge of the border frame, is ensconced by six broad palmettes based in midnight indigo and multiple flowing “cloudband” motifs. This sinuous stylization of a cloud used as a motif in Chinese art was later adopted in Persian weavings as far back as the 16th century Safavid Dynasty. These primary design elements and numerous flowerheads, finely etched vinery, and feathery leaves all rest upon a golden khaki ground. The carpet designer also included a wealth of detailed songbirds ensconced within the field’s medallions and palmettes.
