The Kazak region of the Caucasus Mountains has been a cultural crossroads for a variety of tribal groups, such as Armenians, Azeris, Turks, and other ethnic groups, cultivating their visionary weaving skills over the centuries. The resulting artistic tradition is incredibly imaginative and courageously unfettered. Four emblems occupy the center, each enclosing a stylized “Four Directions” motif. The legendary Tree of Life design is presented as an orchard among a scatter of twinkling diamonds like inverse mobiles growing from elemental pots, alternating in cobalt, teal, and ivory tones. Apotropaic amulets and woven magical wards against envy and misfortune also cover the potent ember red field, as there was no separation of indigenous spiritual beliefs and practices from mundane daily activities. These include technicolor boteh or “Seeds of Life,” double ram’s horns, tiny “cloud bands,” flowering sprigs, multifarious mandalas, and an assortment of polychrome polygons. The sheer variety and whimsy of the enchanting motifs keep the viewer’s eyes moving! This dated piece, corresponding to 1898 AD, comes to us in outstanding, heavier pile condition, having been displayed almost exclusively on the wall. GLC rugs cannot be purchased using exchange credit.
