(High-Collectible)
("Great Lakes Collection") This prime Bakshaish example from the Second Golden Age of Weaving fully illustrates the creativity and inspired improvisation still alive in the third quarter of the 19th century. An astonishing level of conceptual synchronization is achieved in this room-size carpet, balancing both great spontaneity and overall harmony. A navy blue centerpiece sports luxe fan palmettes on thick stalks within the negative space within the medallion. Elementally deconstructed flowers and leaves fill this spacious area and extend to the surrounding rich rust-hued reserve where a second pair of crowned palmette pendants appear. Near the bottom are two fantastical creatures that may represent camels or some other archetypal forms surfacing from a shared cultural subconscious. Fascinating motifs continue in the corner spandrels, where checkered jars and esoteric hookahs join creative botanical suggestions. The entire composition exudes an archaic feel and enticing folkloric quality capable of transforming an interior environment. The clever reinvention of its classic Shah Abbas border is rife with extemporaneous decisions that sprung from an encouraged artistic license. This carpet offers a splendid, glowing patina at 175 years old, lending it an entrancing sense of great visual depth. GLC rugs cannot be purchased using exchange credit.
