("New Arrivals Gallery") Only seldomly does a tribal rug arise that defies classification, the “genealogy” of its pattern language or color palette or its structure do not fit together to point to a certain provenance. This little rug is such an amalgam! It was undeniably woven in Kuba, and from the colors used, it begs an early dating. However, the rug's artistry is entirely a departure from other pieces from this area, even for the few extant “backcountry” examples that can be found. In fact, its pattern usage is distinct from any Caucasian tradition. What it is is a wondrous work of art, from the original shrub design enclosing an elemental bird’s head to the scattering rather than the diagonal line-up of repeated motifs, or certainly from its uniquely personal, enigmatic main border design. The weave is as fine as early Kubas are in general, and the crenelated outer border shows the admirable dexterity of a highly accomplished weaver.
