("Great Lakes Collection") With a narrative art aesthetic, a master weaver's command of this regional style's motifs and their penchant for pure saturated color is revealed in this highly engaging mid-19th-century Bidjov Shirvan. This piece illustrates a profoundly personal one-of-a-kind interpretation of Bidjov iconography. Elemental winged devices ascend the cobalt blue field carrying with them a visual record of an event in the lives of a rugged equestrian people. Masque-like flowerheads and eccentric polygons flood the remaining spaces of the delft blue field. Amid the archetypal assemblage, four riders, accompanied by what could be their flocks, begin their seasonal migration to greener pastures. Possibly, the scenes represent a moment of danger among wolves in this tale. Aided by a mild patina, the drawing in this prize find is astoundingly clear, sharpening motifs large and small. The rug's sonorous chorus of rich and expertly dyed tonalities emphasizes the mysteries evoked by this visual paradigm. A zig-zag "Running Water" guard stripe is followed by crenelated "Mountain" amulets followed by an ultra-stylized rosette-clad ivory band in between frames the field.
